Common wheel diameters for children's bikes are 12, 16, 20, and 24 inches. By comparison, adult mountain bike wheel sizes typically start at 26 inches.
The following rules of thumb should be applied when you try a bike for size: Racing Bikes: Standing 24 vs 26 inch bike footed on the ground, you should have a minimum of 1" clearance between yourself and the top tube of the frame Mountain Bikes: Standing flat footed on the ground, you should have a minimum of 3" clearance between yourself and the top tube of the frame.
A simple calculation can be used to estimate 24 vs 26 inch bike required frame size if you are not able to sit astride a bike to measure: Measure your inside leg measurement to the floor, subtract 3" for mountain bikes, or 1" for road bikes then subtract 10" the average distance from the bottom bracket to the ground.
This will give you the maximum frame size that you will incn.

Pedaler Fit. Second pedal bike On a child's second pedal bike and beyond, they should be up on their tippy toes 2 - 3 inches.
Timid riders should stick closer to 2 inches while athletic riders should be closer to 3 inches. Since children will be riding farther on their second pedal bike, biie will want maximum leg extension for efficient pedaling. If you have ever purchased a bike before, you have probably seen a chart like the one below.
These charts are designed for you to use your child's height to determine the correct wheel size. Sounds simple right?
Then you finally get into the store, sit your child on a few bikes bike specials the correct sv size, only to realize that the bikes seem to fit differently. The main problem is the size of the bike is not solely determined by the wheel size of the bike.
The size of the frame and design of the geometry also matter. This is why the same company can have two 20 bije bikes that are designed to fit children of completely different heights. An example of this is illustrated below.
Notice how both bikes have 20 inch quikr bikes but the bike in figure 1 has a smaller wheelbase and lower seat position. This bike has been specifically designed for a smaller kid. Picked up my Kink mm post and Smut II seat today it came earlierand I'll put them on tonight or tomorrow morning.
